About the Data Analysis 101 Workshop Series

In the modern library, data drives the work, from everyday decisions to larger strategic priorities. Often, library staff are asked to use and even lead data analysis work without ever receiving a solid foundation of learning how to effectively find, interpret, and share data within the library system. Through this course, ULC Research & Data Analyst Corissa Goodrich will provide library leaders with the information they need to advance their library’s data strategy.

Learning Outcomes: As a result of this course participants will be able to:
  • Frame a question for data analysis
  • Identify relevant data, determine whether or not to collect additional data, as well as techniques for data collection.
  • Clean and prepare data for analysis, identifying and correcting common data issues.
  • Confidently perform basic statistics to understand data distribution, trends and significance. This includes measures of central tendency, spread, parametric/non-parametric tests, percent change and linear regression.
  • Communicate the results with diverse audiences using compelling data visualizations.

Course format: This course is designed to provide library leaders with key foundational information over the course of four 2-hour workshops. Each workshop will have some pre-and post-work designed to help enhance and apply the learning to the library context.

Audience: Library leaders with some responsibility for data collection and analysis, whether at a branch or for the system, who lack or have minimal formal training in data analysis techniques.

Prior to this course: This course is designed to work in sequence with our Data Fluency course. It is recommended (but not required) that participants have taken the Data Fluency course OR have some baseline understanding of data reporting as it relates to their role and their library.
